The word "tumor" is latin for a swelling or enlargement which can have many different causes, even an infection or abcess. Most people use the term to describe a growth of new cells, and the word carries with it some typical worries. There are two types of tumors : benign tumors are growths that stay restricted to one area without spreading, and malignant tumors are growths that invade adjacent areas and start new growths in different areas (metastasize). Benign tumors are usually cured by surgical removal, however malignant tumors (cancer) are not so easily cured. Different breeds have tendencies toward differnt types of these malignancies, and the Bulldog seems to experience a high frequency of lymphoma and mast cell tumors ( a type of skin tumor). Lymphomas are the most frequently recognized tumor of the blood forming system and most cases involve the external lymph nodes. The initial signs of lymphoma are unusual swellings or enlargements usually in the lower neck region. Mast cells are granule containing cells that play a central role in the development of allergies.
Every different type of tumor has it's own growth rate, levels of invasiveness, and treatment. Many can be cured because of advances in modern veterinary medicene, while some are rapidly fatal. Be sure to discuss all options with a qualified and experienced veterinarian.
