Most dogs are supposed to have 42 permanent teeth, but fortunately for the Bulldog , it's standards do not require a full set since most brachycephalic breeds have a reduced number due to their short jaws. Actually, Bulldogs often have an extra upper incisor (seven instead of six). This condition appears to be hereditary. More importantly that numbers is the need for regular dental care which includes brushing (with a baby sized toothbrush) and regular dental checkups with your vet. Just like humans, well kept teeth and gums will ensure not-so-bad smelling breath, consistent eating habits, and overall better health. Severe or chronic gum and/or tooth infections can lead to kidney damage. If you do brush your Bulldogs teeth, DO NOT use human toothpaste as it can upset the dogs stomach, your vet will be able to recommend a brushing solution.
