Nares are nostrils, the only part of the Bulldog's airway that can be easily seen. Stenotic nares are nostrils that are pinched shut and often hamper the dog's breathing. Even though the nares may be open, the rest of the Bulldogs airway could be bad. Stenotic nares can be surgically opened, but this may not solve the problem if there is another airway abnormality such as narrow nasal cavities, elongated soft palate (see palate problems) excess tissue in the throat, or collasped larynx and/or trachea, which are often seen in Bulldogs.
