Ectropion refers to the turning out of the lower eyelid. Breeds with loose facial skin will be at risk for developing ectropion throughout their lives (Bulldogs), while it may occur in other breeds as the dog ages and the eyelid muscles become weak, allowing them to "fall" outward. A slight ectropion can cause little to no problems, however, it can cause the delicate membrane inside the eyelid to become irritated resulting in excess tearing. Significant cases of ectropion can be corrected with surgery.
Entropion is just the opposite of ectropion, with entropion the eyelid rolls inward. Usually the lower eyelid is affected, but it is not impossible for the upper eyelid to develop entropion as well. Bulldogs commonly suffer from entropion. It is the eyelashes that usually cause problems with this condition since the eyelid is turned inward, the eyelashes brush against the eyeball, causing the Bulldog to scratch at the eye, redness, squinting, and excessive tear production. Entropion can also be corrected with surgery.
