Demodectic Mange
All dogs carry the microscopic mite called "Demodex canis", and eight-legged relative of the spider, puppies even acquire it from their mother.  Most dogs can use their immune systems to keep the parasite under control and therefore do not have a problem with the mites.  Bulldogs are well known to be prone to developing demodectic mange, the skin condition produced when the mites overcome the bodies defenses.  In most bullies, this could be because of a weakened immune system, which could also be inherited.

There are two types of demodectic mange: localized and generalized.  With the localized condition, the hair around the mouth, eyes, and front legs tends to thin.  Localized demodectic mange generally occurs in young bullies and usually goes away on its own.  Generalized demodectic mange usually starts out as localized, but then worsens and spreads, producing large hairless patches that become crusty sores.  This condition is difficult to treat and may never be completely cured, depending on the bullies immune system.

There are several treatments for this condition, be sure to consult with your veterinarian.
